UKCA & FD30 Explained — What They Mean for Your Installation

At Top‑Lock Installations, we only fit fully certified, UKCA‑marked FD30 systems — because when it comes to fire safety, every detail counts.

Performance Standards

What FD30 Means

FD30 = Fire Door 30‑minute rating.

A certified FD30 door is tested to hold back fire for at least 30 minutes, giving occupants time to escape and emergency services time to respond.

Must Include:

A fire‑resistant core
Correct intumescent seals
Fire‑rated hinges, latch, and closer
A compatible frame
2–4 mm gap tolerances
A valid certification label
If any component is incorrect or installed poorly, the door will not perform to FD30 standard.
Legal Certification

🇬🇧 What UKCA Means

UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) is the legal safety mark for products sold in Great Britain.

It replaced CE marking after Brexit. A UKCA‑marked fire door system has been tested, assessed, and certified to meet UK fire‑safety regulations.

Covers Complete System:

The door leaf & frame
The seals & glazing
The hardware & assembly

This ensures the door performs exactly as it did during fire testing.

How UKCA and FD30 Work Together

The Goal

FD30 tells you how long the door resists fire. UKCA tells you the door has been legally tested and approved for use in the UK.

The Standard

FD30 = Performance
UKCA = Certification & legality

Who Internal Fire Doors Are Suitable For

Internal FD30 fire doors are ideal for homes and buildings where extra fire protection is required between rooms or escape routes. They are commonly used in flats, apartments, shared houses, and properties with converted lofts or integral garages.

Slows the spread of fire and smoke inside the building, giving occupants valuable time to escape safely. Essential for areas connecting living spaces to stairwells, corridors, or high‑risk rooms such as kitchens.

Who External Fire Doors Are Suitable For

External FD30 fire doors are an essential choice for commercial buildings, managed properties, and multi‑occupancy developments where a certified, fire‑resistant exit route is required.

Particularly suitable for apartment blocks, HMOs, care facilities, and any premises where the main entrance or rear access forms part of a protected escape route. Combines fire performance with weather protection and enhanced security.

Technical Specification

Fire-Rated Glass & Glazing

FD30 fire doors can be supplied with fire‑rated glazing, designed to maintain the door’s 30‑minute fire resistance while still allowing natural light into the property. Fire‑door glazing is very different from standard decorative glass — it must be specially manufactured, tested, and certified as part of the complete fire‑door set.

What Type of Glass Is Used?

Hallmark fire doors use certified FD30 fire‑resistant glass, typically one of the following types depending on the chosen design:

  • Pyrobel / Pyroguard‑type fire glass

    A multi‑layer laminated fire‑resistant glass that holds its integrity under extreme heat.

  • Clear or obscure fire‑rated glazing

    Customers can choose privacy options, but only from glass types that have been tested and approved for fire‑door use.

  • Double‑glazed fire units (where permitted)

    Some Hallmark FD30 designs use specialist insulated fire‑rated glass units, but only where the test evidence supports it.

Certified Assembly

Every glazed panel is supplied as part of a tested and certified door set — meaning the glass, cassette, seals, and door slab have all been tested together.
